Lytro & Ethics

Lytro

1. What did you see happen when you clicked on the photo?

The photo automatically focused, and refocused.

2. How does this new camera work?

This new camera is a unique camera that works like a small digital camera, but it is high quality and manual settings. This camera can focus even after you take the picture.

3. What do you think a photographer would have to know about to take this kind of photo (remember its a point-and-shoot, so its full manual mode, what do you need to know about)

You need to know that this camera can focus multiple times. They also need to know there is a fully manual mode.

4. Is it worth the money?

This camera is defiantly worth the money. For only $400-$500, you can get a camera with full capabilities of a real camera in a portable fashion.

Ethics

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)

The model's had many changes to her facial expression. Her eyes were made bigger, her neck was made longer and thinner, and her lips were made bigger.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?

I don't really take a stand on the ethics of this. I believe it is okay for advertising, but not for other circumstances like magazine covers. The world we live in is revolved around money, and the only way people make money is through media/advertising.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?

Yes, as I stated in the previous question, things like beauty magazines would totally be unacceptable.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?

I think that it is either totally unacceptable, or totally acceptable. It doesn't matter if it's your earlobes are made smaller, it's still digital manipulation.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.

Good journalist are very honest and get the facts! Good fashion photographers are very sneaky and produce a fake product.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?

Journalism is usually honest and stays inside boundaries. Fashion photographers like to go outside the box only to gain support for their product.
